The year’s end, and preparing for the next stage of Into the Great Unknown, has me reflecting on what it’s taken to get here. 

In more than 25 years of productions, all over the world, this was the largest, longest, and most physically, logistically, and emotionally demanding…and it was worth it! 

By the numbers, here’s a look behind the scenes: 

Miles traveled: 41,000

U.S. States: 7

Production days: 47

Hours of raw footage: 350

Hurricanes averted by car: 1

Pounds of gear per crew member: 100

Production days without electricity: 14 (NO power outlets in Bridger-Teton Forest, WY or Green River, UT)

Camera batteries carried: 60

Solar panels: 4

Condoms used to protect audio gear on the river: 35

Months of production: 22
